Hirschsprung Disease
Affects 1 in 5000 newborns
More common in boys than girls with a 4:1 ratio
SSHD
Short segment HD is the most common, affecting the lower portion of the colon.
LSHD and TCHD
Long segment HD (LSHD) affects a larger portion of the Large instestine, while Total Colonic (TCHD) affects the entire colon, and occasionally part of the small intestine.

Life long
HD is lifelong. Despite pull-through surgery to take out the non-functioning intestine, many will still need long-term management.
Entercolitis
Serious form of intestinal inflammation, most common to occur prior to or in the first few years following pull-through
